Operational Group on Alternative Weed Control Methods in Organic Vineyards

THE PROJECT

The generic objective of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of different alternative methods of weed control in organic vineyards. The study focuses on the control of weed species that develop under the vineyard line - where action is more difficult - and evaluate alternative methods to the use of interstrains. The work focuses, among others, on those weed species that are expanding and have a high capacity for dispersion and infestation. Conyza bonariensis and Aster squamatus constitute the target species given their current proliferation in vineyards. The objective of being able to establish alternative control methods for these species is based on the hypothesis of the proven effectiveness, in other situations and crops, of the use of different mulches as well as new bioherbicides.

OBJETIVES

Padded

Evaluate the effect of different mulches on the emergence of the selected target species and those others that can develop under the vineyard line.

Allelopathic effects

Know possible allelopathic effects of extracts of plant material used as mulch as a cause of inhibition of the growth of target species.

Bioherbicides

Evaluate the effect of different bioherbicides, at different doses and on different phenological status, of the indicated target weed species.

Compare methods

Compare the effectiveness of control methods based on mulches or bioherbicides compared to that achieved by the traditional use of interstrains.

Inhibitory effects

Estimate possible inhibitory effects on vineyard vigor and production derived from the use of mulches and bioherbicides.

Viability

Carry out an economic and feasibility evaluation of the implementation of the tested treatments.

Innovative strategies for organic vineyards:

Use of padding

The use of mulches under the vine lines opens a hopeful scenario, not only because of its potential effectiveness and durability throughout the vegetative cycle, but also to avoid frequent mechanical interventions.

EXPECTED RESULTS:

The development of new strategies for weed control in organic vineyards

Innovate in tools that allow economic savings in the production system and reduce greenhouse gas emissions
